Reardon's Town

5 for GA-FLA:

- A Georgia win makes for a successful season. The season can be saved tomorrow with a win no matter what has or will happen. Georgia has only beaten the #1 team in the country once in program history, which was Florida. It would put the Dawgs back in the national spotlight for a good reason. The other 3 spotlights have shown a loss at OSU, poor officiating, and Lane Kiffin. A win would also leave Tebow at 1-2.

- Georgia is playing for a Peach Bowl. Mathematically a win would keep Georgia in the SEC East chase. A win coupled with a Florida loss to Carolina would open the door. However, the odds on that are probably at 50-1. So that leaves us aiming for a Peach Bowl. That doesn't sound good when those are the aspirations while in October. But it is one of the most watched bowl games and is played in a great atmosphere against a normally formidable opponent. It also offers some the opportunity to go to Jocks&Jill's if they are still open. Any bowl below Atlanta is irrelevant and really boring. From a program stand point, you do not want to be playing Houston in Memphis.

- CMR has to regain his swagger. The coach has come under fire basically because of being #1 in '08 with a trip to Orlando and an underachieving Defense for the better part of 3 seasons. Call it complacency or whatever you want but the coach has to grab the program and put it back where he took it. A win over Florida in a down year would bring back a lot of credibility real quick. The image of the program needs a jolt that reminds people that it is still capable of being among the elite.

- Jeff Owens, Geno Atkins, Kade Weston. 3 guys that have had very good careers at Georgia all playing in their last cocktail party. A lot of the blame has been put on CWM, DE's, and B. Evans, all rightfully so. However, the 3 DT's were expected to not only be good but dominant. Picked by most to be the strongest combination of DT's in the country, they have been average at best and have not been able to find any consistency. Tebow does his damage right up the gut. I could care less if TT breaks the TD record. But if he is shut down up the middle for a good portion of this game, it gives Georgia a lot better chance of competing. Owens and company need to give us something to remember them for in their final season besides their twitter accounts.

- If nothing else, its a chance to beat Florida when no one expects us to. They are #1, 17 game winning streak, won 16 out of 19, and have the most beloved figure in the game. 2009 has been the worst year in the Richt era but that title will revert back to '01 with a win. Throw it to A.J. Green 15-20 times and see what happens. If we lose it will still be really fun though.

WLOCP

As everyone knows, a number of Georgia supporters have voiced their dislike for the game being played in Jacksonville every year. It’s a topic that has been beaten to death but some continue to piss and moan despite the contract in Jacksonville being extended. I don’t blame the losers who complain. When things get hard a lot of losers look for excuses. Retreating to the beautiful Georgia Dome after losing 16 out of 19 would really say a lot about how big boy Georgia is.

Even though the dimensions of the field didn’t change and both teams are still allowed to play with 11, it became unfair somewhere along the line. Or it might just be the fact that Steve Spurrier came along. When it was Spurrier the player, Georgia dominated Florida and everyone loved The Gator Bowl. When it became Spurrier the Coach, Florida raised the bar and turned into the power it should have always been. Three National titles and two Heisman trophies later they are arguably the best program in the country. Manning never beat Florida and he didn’t play in Jacksonville. LSU is 5-14 in the last 19 meetings and half of those have been in Baton Rouge. Florida has just been a better football team everywhere over the past 2 decades. FSU and Miami being down of late hasn't made things better either. Florida isn’t going backwards anytime soon and that’s a good thing. When Georgia is able to compete every year in Jacksonville it will also mean competing on the national landscape year in, year out. Georgia should fully expect to be on the level of a Florida just like Spurrier felt Florida should be on ours.

BUCK BELUE, 1978-81
Count me among those who would hate to see it moved just because the Gators have owned the series the last 20 years. I don’t buy that it’s a home-field edge for Florida. The last time I checked that stadium was divided right down the middle, half Georgia and half Florida. And I’m not buying this stuff about the Gators having a travel edge with a bus ride over from Gainesville, either. What’s the flight down from Athens? An hour?
And come to think of it, this is a fans’ game in Jacksonville. Friends and families have been gathering for decades in Jacksonville to see the ‘Dogs and Gators go at it. And the game atmosphere for the players is second to none. It’s special just like it is.

JOHN LASTINGER, 1980-83
I’d be on the side that thinks the game should remain in Jacksonville. Obviously, most of my opinion was formed from 1980-1983 when I was playing. But I never felt like — and I think I can speak for my teammates — we were at a disadvantage by having to travel to Jacksonville back then.
Being from Valdosta, I learned in a hurry how important the game is to the South Georgia fan base. It is truly one of the great traditions in all of college football — and I think we should respect that and all that goes with it.

DANNY WUERFFEL, 1993-96
During my sophomore and junior years at Florida, the stadium in Jacksonville was being renovated for the Jaguars, and I had a unique opportunity — I played games in Gainesville and Athens.
Many of the details of the alternating home games have gotten lost in my mind with the dozens of other home and away games in which I had participated. The games that stand out, for lots of different reasons, were in Jacksonville.
The splitting of the stands evenly between Gators and Dawgs, the excitement of a neutral field, the enthusiasm of the fans as part of “the world’s largest outdoor cocktail party” and the significance of the rivalry all combined to provide one of the most unique and memorable college football venues ever.

Georgia vs. Florida in Jacksonville is the greatest spectacle in College Football. There is nothing like it and a bunch of lame excuses by orange peelers will never change that.

Tattnall @ BC Senior Night

BC (5-3; 3-3)
Last Week: Lost to #5 Charlton 40-24
Leading rusher: John Williams
TD's: Williams (2), Hunt
FG: Boyd (37 yds)
Halftime: 30-14

Tattnall County Battle Creek Warriors (5-2; 3-2)
Coach: Jeff Kaiser
Offense: Spread
Defense: 4-4
Best player: QB Quaysean Davis
Other top players: MLB Dwight Stoutamire, LB Kenny Murphy, DE Stephen Byrd, WR Chris Walker, RB Shayon GuestKey losses: RB Brandon Harton, DL Nick Carwell, LB Frank Stagar

Tattnall County is a program on the rise under third-year coach Jeff Kaiser. Kaiser switched from a Wing-T to a spread last year. A key reason why the team was able to reach the state playoffs was the ability of QB Quaysean Davis in the spread. Davis, a dual threat QB, was 1st team all-region in '08 and was selected the pre-season Region 2-AA player of the year. He threw for almost 1,000 yards and ran for over 800 in '08. However, a lingering injury has him questionable for Friday. The rest of the offense has 8 starters back from last year, a number of which reached the State track meet last spring. The top loss was Brandon Harton (1,200-yard rusher). The heir is Shayon Guest, a junior who started as a freshman in 2007 but was injured much of 2008. On defense, first-team all-region LB Dwight Stoutamire is tough. The secondary is a strength.
The Warriors got off to a promising start to the season which included a 34-8 win over Sav. Country Day, 52-0 over Jeff Davis, and 50-0 over Long. However, Tattnall has lost to MCA and Charlton in a year where they had aspirations of competing for the region title. The match up against Benedictine carries huge playoff implications for both teams.

I'm hot!

BC @ #5 Charlton

BC (5-2; 3-2)
Last Week: Lost to Brantley 31-14
Leading Rusher: Alex Hunt
Leading Tackler: Matt Shay
TD's: John Williams (2)
Halftime: 17-14

#5 Charlton County Indians (5-0-1; 4-0)
Coach: Rich McWhorter (207-44-1 in 19 seasons)
Offense: Spread
Defense: 3-5
Best player: DL/OL Suave Bolden
Other top players: OL Johnny Davis, OL Dustin Crews, OL Zeke Hilton, TE Kesean Peterson, RB Tre Hamilton, QB Chris Milton

Charlton County's Rich McWhorter is seeking his 20th consecutive winning season which includes 4 State Championships. Last year, Charlton lost in the first round under McWhorter for the first time, and it was by a 39-7 score. The Indians have no similar plans for 2009. The team has excelled on the offensive side of the ball standing #2 in the state averaging 45 ppg. Sophomore RB Tre Hamilton is the headliner as he ran for 972 yards and 19 TD's as a Freshman. Against Pierce Co. earlier this season, he ran for 311 yards and 3 TD's. Junior QB Chris Milton (1,049 Yds, 18 total TDs in '08) threw 6 TD passes last week and ran for another. The Offensive line is strong and experienced.
At the begining of the season Charlton struggled on defense with only 3 starters back from last year. However, in the past 3 games the effort has been significantly better including a dominant performance in a 42-7 route over Appling. DL Suave Bolden is a McWhorter favorite. Charlton is in prime position for its 7th region championship of the decade and a more familiar deep run in the playoffs.

Homecoming 2009

BC (5-1; 3-1)
Last Week: Lost to MCA 20-16
Leading Rusher: John Williams
TD: Williams
FG's: Boyd (45, 42, 39)
Halftime: 13-13
*Lost on a 54 yard touchdown pass with 1:43 left, 2 plays after a 15 yard facemask on 4th down.

Brantley County Herons (4-1; 2-1)
Coach: Sean Pender
Offense: Multiple spread
Defense: 3-5-3
Starters returning: 7 on offense, 7 on defense
Best Player: QB Devon Blankenship
Other top players: OL/DL Charles Blankenship, OL/DL Mikel Duenas, OL/DL Cameron Hammit, WR Ron Tindall, RB Charles Hutchinson, K Ryan Middleton

Brantley County had seven all-region players (first or second team) in 2008, and all but one return. That includes QB Devon Blankenship. The Herons are the 6th highest scoring team in the state and scored 52 against a McIntosh County team that has given up no more than 16 points in any other game. Success will depend more heavily on the Herons' defense, which allowed more than 30 points per game in 2008. OL/DL Charles Blankenship, OL/DL Mikel Duenas and OL/DL Cameron Hammit lead the Herons' efforts up front on both sides of the ball. The matchup against Benedictine will pit one of the better defenses in the region against the best offense. Both teams lost to MCA by 4 points. It also might include the two best Kickers in the region. This has been one of the most improved teams in the region, and this game will go a long way in deciding their playoff fate.

*The first ever "Cadet March" will be held at 6:15 on Friday. The players will precess through the Paulson parking lot, then into Memorial Stadium.

BC Thoughts

Being an official is a thankless job. As a former basketball referee, I know I blew my fair share of calls. However, one of the first things you learn is, at the end of a close game, let the players play. That was a BS facemask call. Even if it did occur (which video evidence does not confirm) it did not change the outcome of the play and the flag should not have been thrown.

The flag was thrown, MCA capitalized and the Cadets are now 3-1 in the region, with the four remaining games against playoff-quality teams. BC will probably need to win at least 2 more games to get in.

We have to win next week against Brantley. Of the 4 games left, this is the most winnable. Their offense is dangerous, but their defense is awful. As long as we don't turn it over, I think we will be okay.

Summers needs more carries. He is the only RB we have that has the speed to get to the corner. Summers should have also been playing safety during that final drive.

Hunt can't throw, but if he rolls out, he is fast enough to tuck it and run.

Our OL depth was exposed last night. I hope King is able to come back soon.

Stroud handled the loss with class, taking responsibility for the playcalling and not blaming the officials.

Our special teams unit is the best in the state.

I hope to see everyone at Homecoming next week! You come home for Homecoming. No excuses.

Hut 2! Hut 2!
