Georgia-LSU

Georgia dominated North Texas outside of two plays. And anyone who was shocked about how that game played out has seen very few Georgia games under CMR. Hats off to the defense on one of their best performances in a while. Offense did what they had to given North Texas was damned and determind to stop the run............................... LSU game is just as big as Carolina was three weeks ago. I'm pretty confident in saying LSU is a little bit better than Carolina. LSU hasn't played the type of schedule Georgia has so I don't think anyone knows exactly how good the Tigers are. One thing I do know is that we MUST play better run defense. LSU will run no matter who the QB is or how well he is playing. The biggest deficiency under CTG has been the inability to stop the run. Only Herrera, Jenkins, and G. Smith have seen the type of physicalness that LSU will play with on Saturday. Mettenburger does have the ability to beat Georgia but I'd much rather see him beat us over the top than 40 carries for 200+ yards. The other things are the same as any week. Hopefully, Gurley won't fumble, and Murray won't throw it directly to the other team with not one of his guys within 10 yards. Marshall Morgan will be a factor and has to make a kick or two. A John Chavis defense will buckle down in the red zone and we have to get points when down there...................................... I think this game is 50/50. If the game was in Baton Rouge I'd go 60/40 LSU. Georgia's season isn't over with a loss like it would have been had we fallen to the Gamecocks. The MNC would be out the window however, and we'd have to win out to get to Atlanta. But moreso than all that, it's a game in the national spotlight, in Athens, with Gameday, against a top 5 program. Georgia needs to win a game like this with all time greats in Murray and Gurley on the same side of the ball. It will more than likely be a while before Georgia has a tandem like that at those two positions. Defense needs to play at least average and the offense needs to be great. I look for Gurley to have a day to remember.

South Carolina Grades

Great Win. One of the best of the CMR era at Sanford Stadium. LSU in 3 weeks will be a similar challenge. Basically two off weeks leading up to it is huge. 3-1 at the end of September and everyone should be pleased. QB:A Murray played one of his best games ever. Looked more confident than normal and didnt really throw one bad ball. Give a lot of credit to Bobo. Very little long drawn out play action plays with a whole bunch of quick hitters. RB:A A big reason for Murray's big day was obviously Todd Gurley. Best back of my lifetime at Georgia. Marshall is dynamite in space and had a couple of huge plays and Douglass was nice down the stretch. WR:C+ JSW has come out of nowhere to be awesome. I thought he had no chance of scoring on the long TD but his speed was ridiculous. There were 3 legitimate drops and brings the overall grade down. OL: C Easily better than Clemson but nowhere near where I thought they'd be. Gurley being great made them look good and Murray's ability to get out of the pocket led to some big plays. Did a pretty good job with Clowney but once again Bobo has to get some credit for that. The most disappointing unit through 2 games. DL: B- Sterling Bailey had the best game of his career and Garrison Smith played as hard as anyone on the field. Ray Drew finally made some plays. However, little pass rush without the help of linebackers and all those names thrown around in camp, few have shown up so far. LB: B Herrera has been really good so far. His lack of speed shows sometimes but he is always around the ball and makes plays (Shaw fumble). Jordan Jenkins is and will continue to be a factor. Floyd looked really good at times and really inexperienced at others(missing Shaw on 3rd and long with under a minute in the 1st half). He will be a good player though. Wilson got exposed. Was run over and around on a number of occassions by both Carolina backs. The problem with this group is that the #2's inside are true freshman. DB: D- On Saturday, they were as bad as we thought they could be. Langley was the glaring weakness but JHC looked slow, lost, and scared for a huge portion of the game. Moore played a lot in the 2nd half just because he would be where he was suppose to be. Matthews has a looooong way to go. The size and talent is obvious. Its not his fault that he has to be out there but he has to get a whole lot better. Connor Norman played a good bit again so that says something. Very surprised Sheldon Dawson didnt get at least a crack. ST: A- Only reason for the minus is the dropped snap by Barber. However, he kicked off great and the onside kick was my favorite play of the day. Hats off to Beless. Absolutle awesome job by a high school 2nd teamer. Still need to do better on returns. I don't think we have the best guys back there on punt and kick return. But I'm okay with Gurley never being back there. The offense won't play to this level every game. But I also think the defense will get better as the season progresses. The secondary is very bad right now but would benefit tremendously from a better pass rush.

Clemson Viewing Party Grades

-Bunger: B+ Better effort and energy than most, but I think he cared more about The Woot winning than Georgia. Anymouse: C+ One of the few to watch most of the game but seemed to be taking up for Stick the whole time. -Don: C Not good, not bad. The fact that he was losing all his money to Bear could have played into his performance. P10we: B Good host but no "A" because there were no couches blocked and no Asian impressions. Bear: A- Energy and effort was on full blast. At one point I thought he was going to punch Shay for being friends with Stettler. Stettler: C- Honestly understand where he was coming from but I don't think it went exactly how he envisioned. The minus is for his lack of ability to start an actual fight. PHolland: B+ No "A" because he came in late but he just might be in his pinnacle portion of life. Unfortunately, this is my 15th anniversary. Shay: D I like Shay a lot but having seen HHH, he completely underwhelmed. Shane: A+ The best of the night and not even close. Start to finish he was on his game and brought the fighting shoes late. Phenomenol! Stick: I I think I need to see a little more to give a grade. At times it looked as if he was really putting in the effort. Other instances showed laziness and apathy. The athleticism was obvious in the living area, but the numerous clumsy mistakes in the kitchen kind of made it a wash. The ability to overcome an injury is comendable as is the 100% concentration and focus on the actual game. The lingering doubts about his stamina however, leave me giving an "I" at this time.

What lies ahead

The Clemson loss basically means one thing. If Georgia wants to win a National Championship it can't lose again. That's extremely possible with what I saw last night, outside the pathetic performance of our O line. All the goals and aspirations for Georgia are alive and well but a loss to Carolina pretty much ends it all. Murray has to be better. Wasn't terrible last night but Boyd was a good bit better. Gurley is a superstar. He needs a minimum of 25 carries every game. OLine was as bad as any Georgia line I've seen in the last 10 years. And that's saying something. Defense played better in spots than I thought they would. Still have to get a lot better and Carolina has a lot more balance than Clemson. Maybe the most depressing thing is the potential season ending injury to Mitchell. Hurts really bad and you have to feel for a guy whose been tossed around different positions, ready to have a huge year, then this. Next week is 10x more important than last night and that's awesome.
