South Effingham makes its first trip to Memorial Stadium since Coach Herdon took over at BC and the stakes are as high as any BC/South Effigham matchup ever. The winner will maintain their spot atop the sub-region and put themselves in great position for a playoff run. South Efiingham is 5-1 and coming off a win against Richmond Hill at home. Their only loss of the year came against an undefeated Cross Creek team in the final minute of the game. The most impressive win for the Mustangs came against Effingham in which they controlled most of the game with a sound 20-6 victory. BC looked impressive on both sides of the ball last week in the first half against Hephzibah. The intensity and execution seemed to drop off in the second half after getting out to a big lead. The offense moved the ball mostly with the ground game. The defense was dominant for much of the contest but all three scores for Hephzibah were on big plays. A trend that the Cadets must find a way to hault.

South Effingham brings a ground attach that is similar to that which was run while Coach Herndon was in Guyton. A grind it out, time management type of offense that will break a big one from time to time. The Mustang defense has given up 14 points or less in 4 of its 6 games. You know the defense will be sound and prepared to stop a Coach Herndon offense. Going into the game it would be the opinion of most that we will see a quick, low scoring game with two ball control offenses. However, whether or not BC implements the passing attack into the gameplan might change the flow and strategy of the game. And just like every game, the ability of BC's defense to stop the big play will play a huge role in the outcome. A variable that might play a key factor is the weater. How the teams deal with a wet football could make the difference. I see a game that will come down to special teams and turnovers and who takes advantage of opportunities in the red zone. This seems like a generic prediction but on paper the teams seem to be very similar with a little edge going to the Mustangs having experienced more recent success. The biggest game in the Savannah area will go a long way in painting the 3-AAA(A) picture.

VS.

BC enters its first sub-region game with a 3-2 record. Both of BC's losses have come to undefeated Jenkins and Thomson. However, the three teams that the Cadets have defeated have combined for 3 wins, all by Windsor Forest. Hephzibah is much improved. The Rebels have lost to Glenn Hills, Cross Creek, and Thomson who have combined for only 2 losses. They held Thomson to 6 first half points while the Cadets gave up 28 to the Bulldogs.

This is a huge game for both teams with South Effingham, Burke Co., and Liberty Co. considered to be region favorites in what looks to be a surprisingly deep region. BC moved the ball consistently with the passing attack against Thomson. The defense has played well for most of the year outside of big plays from Thomson and Franklin Green. The Hephzibah offense has been spotty with 6 against Thomson but 40+ on two other occasions. The defense has followed suit with a strong performance against Thomson but allowing 35 against a poor Monroe Area team. If BC can prevent the big play, no team has shown they can put a sustaied drive together against the Cadet defense. The Cadets should be able to use a balanced offensive attack and put constant pressure on the Rebels. However, if Hephzibah can play like they did against Thomson on defense and create some big plays with the ball they have a great shot of winning on their Homecoming. Turnovers might decide it.

Big Week on the Road

It's make or break in Knoxville this week. With a win the Dawgs will put themselves right in the middle of the SEC East race. With a loss Georgia loses almost any hope of winning a title this year. I really believe Tennessee has a huge advantage by having had this past weekend off. Georgia's secondary has looked vulnerable much of the time when facing the pass and you have to expect Tennessee to try and take advantage. Georgia's offense should be able to move the ball against a below average Vol "D". I really, really, want to like Georgia but can Richt win in each of his 1st 4 trips to Knoxville? Tennessee was my pick to win the east at the start and though my opinion has changed, people are giving up on this team after losses to the #3 team in the country and at the Swamp. I think the Dawgs can keep it close, but the combination of Fulmer maybe needing this one to keep his job, and a well rested Tennessee team with a strong passing attack, it seems like a mighty tall order for the Dawgs. Georgia might need 40+ to pull it off.

BC faces an even taller task as they make the trip to the historic "Brickyard." The Cadets are heavy underdogs and it's only a cross-over region game. But it might be the most relevant road game BC has played since 2002. BC's sub-region is not unbelievable but outside of Richmond Hill every team is "good" and this year that means Hephzibah too. More than anything it provides a great measuring stick to where this team is and where they could go. Thomson is one of the most successful programs in the state with 5 State Championships and 70 weeks ranked at # 1. BC's game next week at Hephzibah is more important from a state playoff perspective, but a good showing in the first trip to Thomson in school history could go a long way for success down the road. A veteran offensive line, a good group of backs, and an extremely talented QB provide a fun offense to watch even as a grind it out ball control attack. The defense has been good but will face its toughest test of the year outside of Franklin Greene. It is exciting to be back at a level where you think we have a chance every week and the state playoffs are a realistic goal. This team has a chance this week, as well as the rest of the season, to put BC back where it should be and where all of us want it to be. Hut 1 Hut 2.

Calling All Cadets

Hey ya'll. Patrick Holland here. Most of ya'll know me as Jack's older cousin and/or the guy in his mid-twenties that still goes to school in Athens. Anyway, as ya'll should know the Cadets will be traveling to play the Thomson Bulldogs this Friday night. If any of ya'll want a ride let me know. My car is pretty small though so if we have more than 4 people going we'll need to take two cars. The same goes for next Friday at Hephzibah.

If you are going to be in Athens this weekend you have no excuse for not making this game. I have driven by Thomson's stadium ("The Brickyard") numerous times, and while it's not that big, it still looks like it could be a pretty intimidating place to play. This is all the more reason why we need as many fans present as possible to support the players. If CW3 Carl can drive 2.5 hours there's no reason why we can't drive 1 hour. It is time to fall in line...
