Saturday Night Lights

- Arguably the best player in the city, Johnson QB Christian Cooper, is out for the year with a torn ACL.
- A Johnson win would move the Atomsmashers ahead of BC in the region standings.
- BC beat Johnson 46-6 when the schools last met in 2001.
- Sports Illustrated ranks Johnson's nickname as the 6th most unique in the country.

Region 3-AAAAA Midseason Review

Biggest Surprise: Beach
Most prognosticators had relegated Beach to the region cellar this year, but upset wins over Bradwell and Johnson have given the Bulldogs a leg up on the playoff race.

Biggest Disappointment: Benedictine
Everyone knew the Cadets would be "rebuilding" this year after returning only a handful of starters, but most people still expected to compete for a playoff spot. Now, the Cadets will be lucky to have a two-win season.

Best Team Outside of Camden County: Jenkins
The Warriors have an excellent QB and something most Savannah public schools don't have: a great kicker.

Second Half Surge: Bradwell
Everyone expected Bradwell to be the region's default #2 seed this year, but the Tigers have been downright pathetic, getting shutout by Beach and barely squeaking past Johnson. However, I expect CJWjr. to get it together and sneak into the playoffs.

Playoff Prediction:
1. Camden County
2. Jenkins
3. Windsor Forest
5. Bradwell

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

- The game will be played on Thursday night.
- Jenkins or Windsor will be the #2 seed and host a playoff game against Colquitt, Tift, or Valdosta. All region games are big for them.
- Former BC coach Bob Herndon is the offensive coordinator for the Warriors.

Ace Beranado Field

St. Pius X began the 2010 season ranked #3 in one of the AAA state polls and #4 in two others. After an opening 20-12 loss to AA #4 Westminster, Pius has dropped to #9 in the state. The Golden Lions have become one of the best private school programs in the state over the last decade. Last year they fell in the state quarterfinals, in overtime, at eventual state champ Peach County. They also beat Marist 28-3 in the 2009 season opener.

In his 9 seasons head coach Paul Standard has led Pius to the state playoffs 7 times, including a semi-final trip to the Georgia Dome in 2006 while in AAAA. Standard interviewed for the BC opening back in 2006 before taking his name out of consideration late in the hiring process.

Pius runs a true triple option offense out of a base Wing-T. They read every option which you see less and less now. The defense runs a 4-3. The strength will be the Linebackers and Secondary which have almost all starters returning including Geno Smith.

Geno Smith is a Junior RB/CB who some consider to be the best cornerback in the state for the class of 2012. He already has offers from Auburn, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, and Georgia amongst others.
