Benedictine 2013

BC enters 2013 with possibly the highest expectations for any Cadet team since 1997. Last year BC went 8-4 with all 4 losses coming by a TD or less. AA has been the right move at the right time. The region slate is more difficult than that in AAAAA, but the opportunity to compete on a state level is obviously more doable. And like one PPB contributor has stated, perception is everything. Right now, the perception in Savannah is that Benedictine is once again the place for football and athletics. The offense returns 10 starters from a unit that struggled at times but found its way down the stretch in 2012. The QB position has never been more solid with a very good passer and a backup that has already been a starter for a school across town. The running back/wing position is the deepest its been in at least a decade. Despite losing the top guy last year to expulsion, there are 4 guys who are legitimate threats to break a run at any time. A couple of those guys will also double as receivers when the Cadets go into their spread look. Not to mention BC has the best receiver in the region. The offensive line is as big as any line in the area. They looked rough in the scrimmage against Beach but things should be figured out soon with 4 veterans in the starting lineup. Defensively, the Cadets lost 5 starters. All 3 linebackers and 2 down linemen. The secondary should be as good as any in the region with a lot of talent and 2 guys with 3+ years of experience. One of the safety positions will be manned by a rotation of 2 of the best offensive players. Special teams is a huge question mark. Looks like the punting duties will be handed over to someone whose never punted before and the kicking game will be split. FG's will be an issue from anywhere beyond 35 yards. The return game however, should be great. BC has an excellent opportunity to win its first region championship sine 2000. The 3 main contenders (Vidalia, Toombs, MCA)all come to Savannah. The Vidalia game in many ways will be like Georgia-South Carolina. Early in the season and the loser will have a tough time winning a championship. This team has all the ingredients to be really good. Loads of experience, talent at the skill positions, and all the big ones at home. If healthy, this team's goal should be a region championship and at least 10 wins when the playoffs come to an end.
