Whether its taken as a compliment or not, Pierce is the best winless team in the state. Last week the Bears jumped out to a 14-0 lead against region favorite Charlton Co. The Indians came back to win 38-36 after Pierce failed on a 2-point conversion attempt with 51 seconds remaining. Losses to Cook Co. and Coffee Co. in non-region games account for the other two defeats. However, Pierce was down 4 and 9 respectively heading into the 4th quarter in those two contests. The Bears are returning a strong core of players offensively that includes junior QB Jake Graham and big, bruising, senior RB Jaelen Smiley. Defensively, the Bears are retooling after losing key players on the line. There is the issue of replacing the best player from 2008, Kris Durr, who was first team all-region at defensive back, second team at running back and the special teams player of the year. Pierce will rely on two-way players such as WR/DB Obie Foreman and RB/LB Derrail Moore to provide that kind of versatility. The showing against Charlton gained the Bears a tremendous amount of respect and showed that this team is more than ready to challenge for a playoff spot.
